The Beginner’s Guide to Brewing with the Aeropress, the Upside-Down Way

Posted by  hookcoffee  on  April 9, 2016, 2:31 p.m.

In 2005, president of Aerobie, Alan Adler, was unhappy with the time required to brew his coffee. With that dissatisfaction, he set out to bring to life an apparatus that would brew perfectly balanced cups of coffee with minimal work and clean-up necessary, and the Aeropress was born. Years on the Aeropress has a cult-like following, swearing by its versatility, all-rounded quality, and utter convenience. The Aeropress looks like something you'd find in a science lab, which is pretty appropriate for coffee geeks like us! But don't worry, unlike school science experiments, you can't go wrong with the Aeropress if you follow the steps. We do it the upside-down way, simply because it tastes better doing it the right way. We don't know why, but it's a known fact amongst the coffee lovers of the world! https://youtu.be/pzOmt5ThNto

Here’s what you’ll need

  • Aeropress Kit
    • Aeropress
    • Filter paper
    • Stirrer
  • Hot water Approx. 250ml of 95 degrees celcius. If you aren’t able to check the temperature, bring the water to a complete boil then let it rest for 1 minute.
  • Serving cup
  • Freshly roasted coffee from Hook Coffee Approx. 15g of medium-fine grounded coffee. We can grind it for you if you’d like!

Pre-Brew Preparation

Before we get to the actual brewing, we want to rinse the paper filter so as to remove any papery taste present.

  • Place one filter in the basket and place that on your serving cup

  • Pour hot water onto the filter, allowing it to pass through into your serving cup.

  • Discard the water when you’re done

Brew Method

  • Place 15g of grounded coffee into the Aeropress and slowly pour 240g of 95 degrees celsius water onto the coffee bed.

  • Let it steep for a total of 3-4 mins. In the first 30 seconds, stir the brew thoroughly, ensuring that all the coffee grounds are covered by water.

  • After 3-4 minutes, place your cup upside down over the Aeropress and all at once, flip it the right side up.

  • Press down on the plunger, pushing the brewed coffee through the filter into the serving cup.
  • You're done when you hear a whizzing sound!

  • Well, that was easy, wasn't it? Enjoy!

Searching for the Perfect Cup

Brewing coffee to your liking is an ongoing journey of experiments and tweaks. If your coffee is overly bitter, it is likely your brew is over extracted. Try… • Using a coarser grind setting • Ensuring the water temperature is at the ideal 95 degrees celsius. The temperature may be too high. If your coffee tastes bland or diluted, it is likely your brew is under extracted. Try… • Using a finer grind setting • Ensuring the water temperature is at the ideal 95 degrees celsius. The temperature may be too low. • Using freshly roasted and ground coffee (which won’t be a concern if you’re getting your coffee from us!)
